First entry from the journal of the Dark Son Ahriman.
It hasn’t been all that long of a stay in this land before my first assignment was sent to me, a short list that I’m told will take some time to finish. There are creatures people in the land call “pets” but with all the powers I hear these creatures possess… I fear that we may be the one’s getting played. These creatures in even their simplest and basic forms are stronger, smarter, and more agile then we hope to dream of. But… enough of my suspicions, Lets get to work.
So then, I’ve set out with one of my pets and a few lackeys to the area’s told to house these creatures… Magnificent beasts these Dragons are, from time immemorial, these great beasts prowl these dark caves. Only to be brought low by humans, and their slaves. It took some time, but these Ancient Dragon’s have finally let loose a dragon’s egg. One of the crew was starving and insisted we scramble it. I needed not remind him of the folly of his personal quest at the expense of the mission, so we bound him to a stake, stabbed him in the gut and left him there to be subsequently eaten bit by bit by the drakes circling the outer perimeters.
Once we were back at camp, having had no experience with hatching eggs, I bought a few chickens. Of course they were killed by the crew… but not being able to afford more help, I let it slide, for now. I held the egg close to my chest within my robes for some time. Having felt no movement within the egg since I first picked it up, I set about to my research into how to make it hatch. Fruitless are the efforts of idiots looking for something that is beyond their ken. So I started to hold the egg in both hands and stare into it, falling into a trace mana started to wick from my being and be absorbed by the egg. So taken and confused by the event the egg slipped from my hands and broke upon the floor, I stumbled back and the crew rushed the broken egg, as if they anticipated it breaking before a complete hatching.
Suddenly screams of pain, flashed the fire and lightning were thrown about, I distinctly remember seeing magic in the likeness of an energy bolt, but on fire…. Dragon’s Fire… Dragon bolt perhaps? I’d have to check later to see if it’s been noted anywhere. As I came to my senses I could see all of my company lay dying or dead, and withing the remains of the egg, a solitary snake lay their coiled and hissing. As I walked up to it I could have swear I saw its head kilter to a side and regard me for a moment before it slithered over to me in a flash and coiled itself around my shin. Talk about uncomfortable…
I sent a messenger to my benefactors asking for more funding and bodies, it would seem I would be requiring much more help then they anticipated. I was not displeased either… I swear they emptied an entire fortress of hands and gold to move to my mountain cave. Before the help arrived I had this little slithering critter out gathering food, it has made extremely quick work of the local farmstead’s food sources. As this was apparently a grievance, the local militia’s confronted me, to which the snake made quick work of them too. But in the middle of the melee I seemed to have lost the snake as I couldn’t see it, nor would it heed my call. Suddenly one of the corpse’s burst and a giant serpent slithered towards me. I must say I am quite baffled as this creature has no real resemblance of a dragon…. but time will tell. It seems as though combat makes these creatures change and grow stronger.
With this crew being well fed now, I sent them off to the caves to get more, and I set about this plane to find a more suitable challenge for my pet.
I’ve found a graveyard, the undead here are slouches though, not all that fearsome as to my home, I quickly dispatched what I saw, the serpent killing most. Whilst checking the crypts I stumbled upon a cave with some greater undead within, these gave the serpent a fight, and made me tend to keeping the wounds better. In the middle of this fight, my serpent made a transition in form once more, taking on the form of that of an alligator. Okay, we’re getting closer now to what I was expecting… but still far from it! After a few deathrolls on the undead it was torn to shreds, but he refused to eat it. Deeper in the cave we came upon a blue portal, but walking through it only caused a bloody nose.
We were journeying through another cave for the new few weeks, encountering all manners of elementals, poison, acid, blood, crystal, and air if my memory is serving me well enough. The first three were proving to be the best challenge for the creature, and after about the eight or so, FINALLY! Something of some resemblence! It took on the form of a drake! The draconian intellect is definitely there beyond those burning orbs, buffeting its foes with wind, and hammering them with the wings, slashing with its class, and slamming with its tail. Magnificent display of combat prowess! Feeling more confident that I was on the path I set about further into the dungeon, eager to test this creatures limits. Eventually I found my way through a portal to a creature, tentacles amassing itself, it seems as if it is from the Abyss… such a horrifying looking creature. But it sure does put up a fight, it is a fighter of attrition, it can take an incredible amount of punishment. Pushing the drake to the edge, and lucky for me, over. It grew in size to that of a normal dragon, of course nothing normal about this magnificent beast.
It’s been a few months of fighting and this damned thing is trying my patience… I have my suspicions that it has another form… but I cannot be sure… I grow tired of this ceaseless fighting.
Just as I was about to give up and send this thing to an untimely death… it happened… it finally ploughing happened…! It has taken on the form of an ancient dragon. But I have noticed it doesn’t get the same respect that is due of its station. I will send it out with a few of my associates to train it some more. I am too tired to do any more.
It’s been half a year now… but I have correspondence that training was on schedule. Until a fortnight ago, I set out to their last location to check in personally. When I arrived I found the corpses torn to shreds and torso’s crushed. As I turned the corner I saw, it, the ancient dragon was looking right at me, it immediately lunged at me, but at the last moment stopped dead in its tracks. It began following me out of these familiar caves, and the other dragon kin seemed to give it a wide birth. To this day it has me puzzled…
